No, while LifeWise is held during the school day, it does not interfere with students’ mandatory courses. The class schedule is set by school personnel in consultation with LifeWise representatives. Classes are held during non-core academic periods, such as during lunch or electives.
LifeWise classes focus on core themes of the Bible, what we refer to as the “main and plain things” of Scripture, with emphasis on the gospel of Jesus Christ. Each lesson reviews a Bible passage as well as a “Living LifeWise” character trait, such as respect, love or kindness.
LifeWise is complementary to before and after-school programs. The primary distinctive feature of LifeWise is that it operates during the school day, thereby engaging with all students whose parents have given permission for them to attend.
We believe LifeWise is a valuable opportunity for students, and naturally, we want to make that available to as many families as possible! Like many extracurricular programs, we encourage students to invite friends if they enjoy the experience, just like schools do with clubs, camps, or youth events. That said, we never tolerate bullying, manipulation, or peer pressure. LifeWise participation is always voluntary and parent-approved, and no child is ever required, or rewarded, to “recruit” others. Students are welcome to share their excitement, but we emphasize respect, kindness, and personal choice above all else.
No. LifeWise teaches foundational character traits, like honesty, kindness, courage, and respect, through the lens of the Bible. We do not discuss political or controversial issues. Our lessons are designed to be age-appropriate, encouraging, and rooted in Scripture, not current events. When these questions do arise, we direct students to talk with their parents, and church leadership.
Safety is our top priority. All LifeWise staff and volunteers are required to complete a thorough background check and Child Abuse & Safety Awareness Training. In Pickerington, we take additional steps to ensure student safety by requiring full FBI and BCI background checks for all staff, instructors, and volunteers, including our bus drivers who also undergo drug screening. We also have everyone in our program complete CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) training, First Aid and CPR certification, and classroom management training in both PBIS and PAX Tools. We are committed to providing a safe, structured, and supportive environment for every student we serve.
